ENERGY SAVING OPPORTUNITY SCHEME
About the ESOS scheme...
The (ESOS) Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme is a mandatory requirement for all large enterprises in the UK. The scheme requires recording and reporting of energy data for buildings, transport, and industrial processes over a 12-month period. Additionally, depending on the size and complexity of your portfolio of buildings, the scheme requires energy surveys accompanied by cost-effective recommendations to reduce energy demand and improve energy efficiency. As the name implies, the focus is on opportunities to reduce energy use and its associated cost to UK plc.
ESOS Energy Scheme Compulsory Phases
Compliance with the second phase of the scheme must be completed and reported to the Environment Agency by 5 December 2019.
The timings of each ESOS scheme phase are shown here:
What happens if I didn’t make the ESOS scheme deadline?
If a qualifying organisation doesn’t meet the deadline, they can expect to receive a basic fine of £50,000, plus an additional fine of £800 per day up to a maximum of 80 days.
Who is affected?
All large enterprises in the UK will be affected. This is defined as having 250 employees or more, or having both a turnover greater than 50m euros and an annual balance sheet greater than 43m euros. SMEs, franchises, and public-sector bodies are generally exempt from the ESOS scheme.
